Continuationism, Worship, and Music

Scott Aniol

I’ve mentioned before that I think that one’s theology of the Holy Spirit is foundational to differences in worship philosophy, particularly the kinds of music one will choose to use in worship. It’s undeniable historically that the Praise & Worship Movement was birthed in charismaticism, and I think a theology of continuationism is still at the heart of the matter.

This post by Bob Kauflin will give you a place to start if you’re curious about that claim. Kauflin talks a bit about desire to expect evidences of the Holy Spirit’s work in worship gatherings, and lists what he considers the most significant books on the subject.

I may do a more thorough post on this in the future, but it has interested me recently that the most influential men/ministries on worship today in both evangelicalism and (increasingly) fundamentalism are continuationists: Kauflin/Sovereign Grace, Driscoll/Mars Hill, Piper (he’s at least open to sign gifts), and Grudem’s Systematic Theology.
